My final studio assignment has begun:(
We are doing a sponsored project with Thumbtack Press this time around.
Slightly unsure of which direction to take, I decided to stick with what I do best.
My idea has been one floating detached in my mind for some time now. Over the summer, I bought the book Memoir's of a Geisha. For those of you who loved the movie, I suggest reading this one. So rich and full of imagery, I was entranced. Particularly one instance stood out in my mind. The little girl, Chiyo is stolen from her impoverished home and sold into slavery at a geisha house. The first day she arrives, she finds a moth that she wraps with a piece of silk and hides below a stone in the courtyard. Several years pass and Chiyo has been trained to become a geisha herself when she remembers the tiny moth in silk. It was her solace. Her only tangible connection to a world that no longer existed to her. When she opened the piece of silk the moth had crumbled into dust. It is a testament of change.
With this in mind, I came up with these sketches::
